Memoir Writing Course

 Structure  –  Tutor  –  Enrolement/Fees   –  Testimonials

Need help, guidance, a structured approach to whip your memoirs into shape or a guide to begin writing them – then this online Memoir Writing Course is for you!

The Course is designed to stimulate, organise and craft your writing and develop an ability to write based on personal experience and with literary purpose. The aim is not necessarily to come away with a full-length memoir under your belt but it will point you in the right direction by focusing on elements of the genre including characterisation, plot, dialogue and description that you can build upon. Most importantly it will make space in your life for writing.

By the end of these 8 modules, you will have conducted a body of research pertinent to the events and time you wish to explore and you will have built up a collection of pieces which have been critically reviewed and will serve as a structure for a full length memoir.

Each module focuses on an element of memoir writing and the exercises that follow are designed to isolate and work on that particular writing muscle. Your tutor’s role is to act as a sounding board and editor, highlighting areas of strength and offering objective advice to develop your skill. This one-to-one approach means that you are actively encouraged to seek a dialogue with the tutor who may in turn suggest you work on specific assignments outside of the modules presented here.

Structure: Memoir Writing Course

This online Memoir Writing Course is made up of 8 modules. Each concentrates on a particular element of memoir writing. The first section of each module introduces the theme and is followed by a series of writing exercises that do not have to be submitted for review, but are just as important to the overall progress of the course (these exercises might include areas of research into family history or a particular setting for example, interviews and character studies).

Modules: Memoir Writing Course

  1. Introduction to Memoir Writing: Structure and the Writing Process
  2. Truth in Memoir
  3. Writing Real People
  4. Your Voice and the Voice of Others
  5. The Substance of Story
  6. Scene and Summary
  7. Word Choice and Description
  8. Putting It All Together

Every module includes an assignment that you will submit for critical appraisal where the focus is placed on the craft of writing compelling prose. When you send in your completed assignment, I will review it and return it back to you with comments within 3 working days. If you wish to re-edit and submit the work again you have the opportunity to do so at this point although it is not obligatory. At the end of each module and review there are tips on structuring, organising and researching. In the final module you will be asked to write 5000 words. These could be the opening of a full length memoir or passages that are interconnected or alternatively a selection of your work that can stand alone as a personal essay.

Testimonials: Course Tutor

Mary-Jane is wonderful tutor and I am enjoying my Fish online course immensely. Many thanks,

Esme Hillis

I thoroughly enjoyed working with Mary-Jane. I would say there was the right level of straight forward critique balance with positive prompts and encouraging feedback.

Andrea Wicks

The teacher – Mary-Jane Holmes had a feel for what I wanted to say, where I wanted to go with my stories, and guided me with clarity, professionalism and human warmth. She has made me much more aware of making choices rather than just scribbling along, which has made me feel I have a pretty great toolbox now. And she made it great fun too!

Jette-Julie Rosendal

Mary-Jane was very encouraging right from the start and she always found something positive to say about each assignment. Her criticism/analysis was always very clear and accurate (when I read it, I could immediately see the pertinence of it). At one point, I described her criticism of an assignment as “gently incisive” and I think that could be use to sum up just about all her interaction.

Kieron Lyons

Mary-Jane is an excellent teacher – prompt, direct, precise, encouraging and clear.

Nancy Fermanagh

Mary-Jane’s feedback has been spot on for all of my work. She has an excellent way of getting to the crux of what might improve a piece, helping me to see how I might make the reader think a little more for themselves, through suggestions and hints. Excellent and constructive feedback throughout the course.
